On the top line, after "News", "Scores", "Forum", I have "Inbox" followed by a "1" in a circle.
I understand that I will have a message received.
How do I access it?

so far you're doing great
you click on "inbox" a new window opens
unread messages are darker in color
to open the message you click on the [+] in the upper right corner
to answer you click on answer and type your text, then send
to close you click on the [-] which has replaced the [+]
friends
